A Rosé from Garda: The Essence of Elegance

From the morainic hills of Garda, Costaripa presents a masterful Rosé. The Mattia Vezzola Grande Annata M. Cl. Rosé 2018, an explosion of elegance and complexity, seduces with its fine perlage and an enveloping bouquet, extolling the unique terroir of Valtènesi. This wine celebrates over fifty years of research and passion for an exceptional Italian Method Classic.

It all started with a deep passion of a man who, living in an area with a historical vocation for “Rosé” wines, decided to embark on his own journey as a winemaker and vintner. In 1936, Mattia Vezzola Sr. purchased his first vineyards in Moniga, in the “Costa” locality, where the delicate and refined red-berried Groppello Gentile grape is cultivated. Here, he created his first Chiaretto di Moniga, passing on his deep love for wine and this land to his sons, Bruno and Franco, and later to his grandson, Mattia.

After traveling to Champagne, Mattia Jr. decided to bring the art of classic sparkling winemaking to Valtènesi, following the example of the famous French wines. Thus, in 1973, the first Metodo Classico Costaripa from Lake Garda Chardonnay grapes was born.

This passion, handed down through generations, has led Mattia Vezzola to become an internationally renowned winemaker, named the best winemaker of the year by prestigious Italian and European institutions, a recognition that testifies to the excellence achieved by the winery and the importance of his contribution to the world of wine. As he himself admits: ‘Since 1973, my goal has always been to express perfection through the refinement of the bubble. The Grande Annata Rosé 2018 embodies the dream of uniting the energy of Pinot Noir with the elegance of Chardonnay, creating a wine capable of surprising with its balance and complexity while remaining Italian.”

The Mattia Vezzola Grande Annata M. Cl. Rosé 2018, the result of an extraordinary year and, as always, a rigorously hand-harvested vintage, represents the pinnacle of a journey of experimentation with the Classic Method that Vezzola has been pursuing for over fifty years.

The blend of Chardonnay (80%) and Pinot Noir (20%), cultivated on the external moraines of Lake Garda, cold due to the influence of the Adamello group but sunny in the morning due to the south-southeast exposure, has given life to a wine that embodies all the elegance, complexity, and purity of the effervescence that has always characterized Costaripa’s philosophy.

To testify to the value and vocation of the great Rosés born on the Lake in 1896, this celebration of success intertwines with another important moment in the history of Costaripa: in 2018, in fact, the Molmenti 2015 won the Three Glasses award, marking a historic milestone for Italian enology as the first Rosé to win this recognition since the creation of the Gambero Rosso Award. A triumph that consecrated Valtènesi and its wines among the excellences, paving the way for a growing appreciation of Rosés from dedicated viticulture. Today, the Grande Annata Rosé 2018 receives this same prestigious award, confirming a vision that looks ahead without ever losing the roots of craftsmanship and territory.

With an aging of 54-60 months and a very fine perlage, this Rosé seduces with its complex bouquet of red fruits, citrus fruits, and floral notes, enriched by the maturity of small fruits and a crisp texture that gives the wine an unparalleled elegance. A celebration of craftsmanship and the unique terroir of the Morainic Hills of Lake Garda, where passion and care for each individual grape have become the hallmark of a winemaking journey that began half a century ago.
