A constellation of light bridging culture, memory, and design vision: Ramun’s 7 Stars collection

Conceived from an idea by Alessandro Mendini, Ramun’s 7 Stars collection is conceived as a collective lighting project, capable of weaving together design, cultural identity, and emotional depth.

Inspired by the Big Dipper constellation, 7 Stars brings together seven internationally renowned designers, artists, and architects, each invited to interpret a “star” within a shared vision.

More than a simple collection, 7 Stars unfolds as an evolving narrative: a journey revealed over time through the release of one lamp at a time. Each design represents a different country and cultural context, contributing to a layered story of both diversity and shared sensibilities. Curated by Mendini himself, the selection of contributors reflects not only design excellence but also a more intimate sensibility, tied to memories, atmospheres, and domestic impressions.

At the core of the collection lies a profound and universal idea: light as a presence that accompanies and protects. Each object is conceived as a silent guardian of everyday life, offering emotional comfort and visual well-being, especially in the most intimate moments of domestic life. In this sense, light transcends its technical function to become symbolic – an element that guides, reassures, and builds connections. Complementing this dimension is a sound component that further enriches the experience: each lamp incorporates a musical element, creating relaxing and immersive atmospheres. Light and sound interact in a delicate balance, amplifying the emotional perception of the object.

From a design perspective, each lamp is based on the same technical principles – dozens of levels of precise light intensity control, flicker-free emission, and attention to visual comfort – while taking shape through different forms and design languages, expressing the individual sensibilities of each designer. The result is a collection that is both diverse and coherent, where each piece maintains a strong identity while remaining part of a harmonious whole.

The project begins with Campanello, designed by Alessandro Mendini for Italy, and continues with international contributions spanning Europe and Asia: Marcel Wanders (The Netherlands), Jean-Marie Massaud (France), Jaime Hayon (Spain), Han Meilin (China), Yoshiki Hishinuma (Japan), and Younghee Cha (Korea). A journey that will symbolically come full circle under the direction of Atelier Mendini, completing an ideal circle “from Mendini to Mendini”.

So far, the collection has unfolded up to the chapter dedicated to Bella Crystal, while future launches will continue to be revealed progressively.

Bella: Marcel Wanders’ double star

Within the 7 Stars constellation, the contribution from the Netherlands takes shape through Bella, designed by Marcel Wanders. The lamp is developed in two complementary versions – Plissé and Crystal Cut – conceived from the outset as a dual system inspired by Mizar and Alcor of the Big Dipper constellation: two distinct stars that appear as one.

The Crystal Cut version, launched this year, introduces a more recent and compact interpretation of the design, expanding the collection’s expressive possibilities. While Plissé is intended for larger spaces, where it diffuses a soft and enveloping light, Crystal Cut offers a more intimate and dynamic dimension. Compact and easy to place, this version stands out for its faceted structure, which transforms light into a decorative element. Its prismatic surface creates complex light effects, casting crystal-like reflections onto surrounding surfaces. The result is a vibrant visual effect that animates the space and redefines its atmosphere, making light not only functional but also expressive.

Louise: the poetic balance of Jean-Marie Massaud

With Louise, entrusted to the sensitivity of Jean-Marie Massaud for France, the 7 Stars collection explores a more rarefied and essential dimension, where light becomes a silent and sophisticated presence. The design is defined by a rigorous formal balance, where every element is reduced to its essence to highlight the quality of the light itself. Soft and carefully calibrated, the light helps create an intimate, contemplative atmosphere—almost suspended in time.

In line with the collection’s founding principle, Louise also integrates a sound component that interacts with light, reinforcing the multisensory nature of the experience. The result is an object that does not impose itself, but rather suggests its presence with discretion, interpreting the home as a place of balance and well-being.

Campanello: Alessandro Mendini’s original star

The first chapter of the 7 Stars collection, Campanello represents the origin of the project and embodies its most intimate essence. Designed by Alessandro Mendini for Italy, the lamp is conceived as a symbolic object, capable of translating the emotional dimension of domestic light into form. Its name recalls a simple, everyday gesture—that of ringing a bell—evoking ideas of welcome, presence, and connection. Light thus becomes a subtle signal, a gentle invitation that accompanies family life and marks its rhythms.

In Campanello, light and sound come together for the first time within the collection: a music-box melody introduces an emotional layer that expands the object’s function, transforming it into a sensory device designed to generate comfort and familiarity. A manifesto project that defines the language of 7 Stars and establishes its conceptual core.
